Global law firm Freshfields announced on 15 April 2026 that more than 5,000 firmwide professionals now use AI tools built with Google's Gemini models, one year into the firm’s strategic collaboration with Google Cloud.

Since the collaboration launched, Freshfields has integrated Google’s Gemini models across multiple bespoke legal solutions developed by the Freshfields Lab. These include Dynamic Due Diligence (D3), Case Management Platform, Multi-jurisdictional Insights Platform and the firm's proprietary general AI platform.

In addition, Freshfields deployed and rolled out Google NotebookLM Enterprise with CMEK (custom managed encryption keys), ensuring the highest level of data security. Over 2,100 team members regularly use NotebookLM Enterprise to synthesize complex material and navigate large document sets more efficiently.

Freshfields has rolled out Google Workspace to over 2,800 users. This includes Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and more. Colleagues are using Google Workspace with Gemini for meeting transcription and document summarization, and creating custom Gems for various business services and legal workflows.

As an integral part of the firm’s rollout and adoption effort, Freshfields provided a comprehensive internal AI upskilling and training program, supported and endorsed by Freshfields leadership and partners. The AI Academy was developed in-house and delivered by 260 Freshfields AI Champions, including guest speakers from Google Cloud.

"A year ago, Freshfields set out to prove that AI could genuinely change how a global law firm works in everyday client delivery," said Freshfields Chief Innovation Officer Gil Perez. "Now, our team members use Gemini, NotebookLM Enterprise and Google Workspace daily, collaborating across teams with confidence, proficiency, and strong governance. This is the strong indication that we are delivering on that ambition as we continue to raise the bar for our client service."

“A year into our Google Cloud partnership, Gemini is no longer an experiment at Freshfields – it is infrastructure. Our teams and clients use it daily across the Freshfields Lab's platforms for complex legal work spanning multiple practice areas. As we deepen this collaboration, we will continue to expand the boundaries of what AI can deliver for our clients.” said Lukas Treichl, Partner and Co-Head Freshfields Lab.

"The legal profession is defined by the need to synthesize vast amounts of complex information with absolute precision," said Pat McCarthy, Vice President, Google Workspace. "By integrating Gemini with Google Workspace and deploying tools like NotebookLM Enterprise, organizations like Freshfields can move generative AI out of the sandbox and into core business workflows. This collaboration illustrates how a secure AI ecosystem can scale across a global firm while upholding essential data governance."
